Saguni Movie Review

Saguni film is basically about a guy who struggles to protect his family heritage house from destroyed by the government for a railway contract. Seems nobody can help him; he became a political kingmaker which was only way to safe his family heritage house at Kaaraikudi.  Saguni directed by debutant director N. Shankar Dayal and it was huge introduction for him. The new director able to roped in many famous actors in industries other than Karthi and Santhanam for his Saguni like Prakash Raj, Kotta Srinivasan, Radhika Sarathkumar and Nasser and this combination brought a huge publicity for the film before the release. G. V. Prakash has scored music for Saguni and the tracks sounds folk and romantic genre.

The introduction song for Kamal, ‘Kandha Kara Vadai’; gave a grand opening for the movie. But the visual continuity of the song is a bit poor. Seems, Kamal describing the life of Chennai people and their daily struggles for a moment but the climate of the song is not moving consistently; day and night shots been placed repeating. Kamal wearing same costume for the entire song which means the song comes along with the story and it happens in a day. So, the visual of the song will be more realistic if it’s moving from day to night consistently. The visualization of ‘Manesellam Mazhaiye’ song is adding credit to the film cinematographer P. G. Muthiah because the shot angles and shot placing is fulfilling the frame with creativity and unique.

The first half of the film is a bit dull and the shots are look similar. Kamal’s flashback revealing is not so impressive. The first part of flashback which is about Kamal’s family and his heritage house is adding credit to the storyline because it gives a random introduction what is the story is all about.  But the other parts of the flash back keep on telling about Sri Devi and that scenes reducing audience attention on the film. This is because Saguni film trailer have created an idea among people that it’s a political thriller presentation so dragging of love flashback in the film reducing audience expectation on the film via creating dull climate.

The second half of the film is the mass part. The second half showing how Kamal planning the Tamil Nadu politics as kingmaker and how connecting each of the main characters at the climax. In this part, all the actors provided awesome performance over their character. Prakash Raj as Tamil Nadu CM, Bhupati has showed the eager to make money in politics very well. As usual he played the villain character with consistent emotion and dialogues. Nasser as Swami Ji also handled his role wonderfully; Swaji Ji’s ‘before and after’ part has created humor feeling among the audience. Same goes to Radhika. The screenplay is so interesting and fast at the second half. The film Editor A. Sreekar Prasad, able to show Kamal’s under movement in the Tamil Nadu politics very thrilling.

Even the film does not mention about current Tamil Nadu politics directly but the entire film keep on telling how a politician must think and what he or she must do for people who voted for them. The director also trying to reveal his point that the normal people can be the leader for the society and at the same time they should think how they can improve the living quality of the community who voted for them. Saguni also have critics the mentality of the community; voting based on money and short term facilities providing by the political parties just to earn the votes.

Saguni is produced by Anthony Xavier and distributed by Studio Green. Saguni is a film about how a politician should be and what he must do towards people who voted for him or her as a reply rather than kingmaker’s political game.

This is my own review and I done this just improve my knowledge in film and production industry. Please forgive me if you feel I have written something wrong. Thank You.
